The Future is Youth (FIY) program
With the Future Is Youth (FIY) program, becoming an NSCC grad has never been easier. If eligible, you receive free tuition and funding to cover your college fees. And you get an additional $900/month for housing and $500/month for food while you study and attend NSCC.
Who is FIY for?
To qualify, you must:
- be a Canadian who self-identifies as Indigenous and/or Black
- be between the ages of 17-30 years
- have completed your high school diploma or GED
- be under court order within the last couple of years and are involved with Nova Scotia Community Corrections (including mental health/wellness court and domestic violence court)
How does FIY work?
Meet Dayton Goree, our Youth Program Support Navigator at NSCC. Dayton will help you through every stage of the process – from applying to FIY to choosing an NSCC program, he will be there to guide and support you. Dayton and his team at NSCC have worked hard to build a culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all students.
“It’s natural to turn away from a direction when you don’t see your culture represented, and it’s healthy to question why you would follow such a path. Your past experiences have brought you to this opportunity today. Use your pride, resilience and strength to create your own, new path forward. We can walk it together so your journey to NSCC can be a culturally-inclusive experience.” - Dayton Goree
Why was FIY created?
FIY was designed to help you move beyond your experience with the criminal justice system. FIY allows you to explore your future path through your own personal and cultural lens and find an NSCC program that will lead to a career that is right for you. Finding a good fit can mean increasing the quality of your life by doing something you enjoy and can be proud of, while expanding your economic power through sustained employment. You can be the leader that makes a difference to someone else who needs it. That’s why FIY was created.
