Institute of Skilled Trades Industry Bulletin

This Bulletin provides a high-level update on current initiatives, upcoming activities and key information relevant to our industry partners, discussed in monthly Institute of Skilled Trades (IST) Council meetings. The Council will continue advancing priorities and sharing further updates as work progresses.

Revisit of what’s in flight

Members discussed the work that is currently underway and received an update on the following projects: Standardized curriculum timelines, external outreach details, trade review timeline, screening, attendance policies, and a procurement update.

Skilled trades awareness, exposure and promotion and what needs to be done going forward

Members reviewed an inventory of exposure to trades programs which highlighted the work already being done by system partners in the skilled trades. Gaps were discussed and how communication around programs could be improved. Members also emphasized the positive impact of skilled trades camps within their networks.

IST program mix planning

Members reviewed the process for IST program mix planning, including timing of program offerings, data inputs for decision-making, and considerations around one-year certificates versus two-year diplomas. Discussion focused on next steps for implementation planning.

Enrolment / waitlists

A small working group has been established to address waitlist challenges and identify ways to connect individuals to faster access opportunities. Council members received an update on the group’s progress and ongoing efforts.

Transforming the classroom into a ‘worksite mentality’

Members reviewed a draft plan on how to transform the classroom into a workshop and what work ethics and expectations should be set.
