Institute of Skilled Trades Industry Bulletin

This Bulletin provides a high-level update on current initiatives, upcoming activities and key information relevant to our industry partners, discussed in monthly Institute of Skilled Trades (IST) Council meetings. The Council will continue advancing priorities and sharing further updates as work progresses.

Revisit of what’s in flight

Members discussed the work currently underway and received an update on the following projects: timeline mapping for all ongoing projects, KPIs and metrics, external outreach programs, IST program mix planning, NSCC waitlists and a procurement update.
Status: In progress

IST organizational structure

Members reviewed and provided feedback on a draft IST organizational structure, including discussions on governance, reporting relationships and the roles and responsibilities that will support the initiative's implementation.
Status: Complete

Screening processes and integration with Education and Early Childhood Development

Members reviewed a draft of the proposed screening process planned for implementation in Fall 2027 and discussed opportunities to align it with outreach initiatives to attract and support high-quality candidates pursuing careers in the skilled trades. Members also reviewed and provided feedback on the draft screening questions intended to support the assessment process.

Quality Assurance frameworks for skilled trades training delivery

Members reviewed several draft quality assurance frameworks for both pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship. Members provided feedback on the frameworks.
Status: In progress

Holistic skilled trades training system

Members discussed the opportunity to create a more integrated skilled trades ecosystem that connects learners from early career exploration in junior high and high school through post-secondary training, apprenticeship and certification. Members provided feedback on how to ensure the entire skilled trades system is aligned and proactive to change.
