Challenge Nova Scotia

Every fall for over a decade this signature free, pan-provincial problem-solving competition has been calling on NSCC students to create innovative solutions to real social challenges facing Nova Scotia. Open to students from all disciplines and campuses, this annual event is a chance for students to collaborate, think big and make an impact.

How it works

  • Teams: 3–5 students
  • Timeframe: 8 hours
  • Task: Respond to a challenge question issued by the Premier of Nova Scotia
  • Deliverable: An infographic outlining your solution
  • Judging: Industry and community representatives evaluate submissions
  • Prizes: Cash awards for top teams; the top three ideas are shared with the Premier

Why it matters

Since its launch in 2015, Challenge Nova Scotia has tackled issues inspired by the One Nova Scotia Coalition’s Report: We Choose Now – A Playbook for Nova Scotians. Past challenges have explored:

  • Retaining young people in the province
  • Recruiting family doctors
  • Attracting immigrant entrepreneurs
  • Increasing commercialization

Challenge Nova Scotia 2025

On Friday, November 14, nearly 300 students participated in this year’s event. The question, issued by Premier Tim Houston, asked teams to explore:

“How can Nova Scotia become a leader in responsible artificial intelligence (AI) while protecting jobs, ensuring equity, maintaining integrity and supporting environmental sustainability?”

Students worked in fast-paced, collaborative environments, supported by mentors from NSCC and local communities. The winning team from Burridge Campus impressed judges with Hightide AI, a solution designed to help Nova Scotians reduce energy usage through smart monitoring tools and renewable integration. Learn more about Challenge Nova Scotia 2025
