African Nova Scotian and Black student advisors
African Nova Scotian and Black student advisors are a resource for future and current NSCC students of Black and African descent. They can answer your questions and help you find the information, culturally-responsive supports and academic supports you need to succeed.
Your African Nova Scotian and Black student advisor can:
- Offer career exploration
- Help you with your NSCC application process
- Connect you with funding opportunities, including emergency financial supports
- Offer guidance around applying for NSCC awards, scholarships and bursaries available for African Canadian and Black students
- Help you access culturally-responsive tutoring, counselling and other learning supports and student services
- Connect you with other African Nova Scotian and Black learners
- Work with your campus community to offer an Africentric approach to events and activities
Study and learning supports
African Nova Scotian and Black students have access to the following culturally-responsive study and learning supports.
Tutoring for African Nova Scotian and Black students
NSCC students have access to tutoring at no cost, including culturally-responsive tutoring through the African Nova Scotian Student Success Tutoring Program. This program is funded by the African Canadian Services Division of the Department of Education.

Counselling for African Nova Scotian and Black students
SaDeia Williams provides counselling to students at Akerley campus as well as to any NSCC student who identifies as Black or African Nova Scotian, African Canadian or a person of African descent and is seeking culturally-responsive counselling services. SaDeia can be reached at
Awards for African Nova Scotian and Black students
We offer more than $5 million in awards, scholarships and bursaries each year including dedicated awards for African Canadian and Black students.
Africentric learning
We offer Africentric learning opportunities, including our Adult Learning Program - Africentric Learning Option for African Canadian and Black students who want to complete their high school diploma as well as the Africentric Early Childhood Education program.
