Awards and recognition

CiCan recognition

Each year, Colleges and Institutes Canada (CiCan) grants awards of excellence. Awards in nine categories, including sustainability, recognize best practices in postsecondary institutions across the country.

Gold Excellence Award

  • In 2021, we received the Gold Excellence in Sustainable Development Award.

AASHE recognition

Each year, The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) recognizes top-performing colleges and universities in 17 sustainability impact areas, as measured by the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS).

STARS Gold certification

  • In 2013, we were certified with a STARS Gold rating. We maintain this rating through recertification every three years.
  • From 2017-2019, NSCC was the overall top performer among associate colleges worldwide.

STARS was designed specifically for colleges and universities to measure sustainability performance in all aspects of higher education. Institutions achieve a rating of platinum, gold, silver or bronze based on how well they score in a range of sustainable practices. Currently, there are more than 300 rated institutions across North America.

Canada Green Building Council recognition

Since 2008, all new NSCC buildings have been built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards and certified through the Canada Green Building Council.

    • In 2019, The Hon. Dr John Hamm Trades and Innovation Centre received the Canada Green Building Council (Atlantic Chapter) Leadership Award for Excellence in Green Building - New Construction.
  • LEED Silver – Marconi Trades Wing (Sydney)
  • LEED Silver – Ivany Campus (Dartmouth)

LEED is an internationally recognized rating system in over 132 countries. It acknowledges excellence in green building design, construction and operation.

BOMA Canada recognitions

The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), through its Building Environmental Standards (BEST) program, measures the environmental performance of buildings. We’ve been enrolled in the BOMA BEST program since 2008, and our average campus score has increased from BOMA BEST Silver to BOMA BEST Gold.

BOMA BEST certification

  • In 2019, all campuses – except for Ivany Campus and the Institute of Technology Campus (IT) – were recertified BOMA BEST Gold. Ivany and IT campuses are certified BOMA BEST Platinum.

BOMA BEST is North America’s largest environmental assessment and certification program for existing buildings.

Canada Green Building Council recognition

In 2019, the Canada Green Building Council (Atlantic Chapter) presented NSCC with the Inspired Educator Award in celebration of our Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology program.

The two-year diploma enables students to become highly skilled in energy management, sustainable design, green technology and alternative energy systems. The leadership award recognizes the College’s commitment to ensuring tomorrow’s workforce is sustainability focused and environmentally conscious.
