Webinar: Assessing Hurricane Fiona’s impact on Acadian forest sites

Hurricane Fiona left a clear footprint on forests across Nova Scotia, offering a rare opportunity to observe how wind shapes Acadian forest ecosystems. In this session of Webinar Wednesdays, registered professional forester and forest ecologist Peter Neily shared early findings from his assessment of six late-successional forest sites impacted by the storm. Using drone imagery, he documented changes in canopy structure, tree fall patterns and site variability to understand how wind functions as a natural disturbance across the region.

Peter’s insights help illustrate the long-term role wind plays in forest development and resilience. His analysis also contributes to ongoing work in ecological forestry, supporting approaches that consider natural disturbance regimes when planning and managing forested landscapes. This webinar offers a valuable look at how science, technology and field expertise come together to inform sustainable forest practices in Nova Scotia.
