Dreaming is easy. Doing takes courage.

A woman sits at a desk and writes in a notebook.
Januka Adhikari grew up in a refugee camp in Nepal. When she arrived in Halifax with her husband and his family in 2010, all she had was a suitcase and a dream.

“As a young girl, I wanted to be a nurse,” says Januka. “It was very hard to do in Nepal because I was not a citizen and would have had to pay a lot of money to get considered, and we didn’t have that.”

Januka enrolled in NSCC’s Adult Learning Program. With lots of hard work and determination, she got her Adult High School Graduation Diploma and applied to the Practical Nursing program.

Now she’s a mother and works as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial hospital, caring for the vets who fought for the country that welcomed her in.

“It was tough, coming to a new place and starting over. I always wanted to be a nurse and it was hard, but I made it through. I love what I do and where I live.”
