Air-Source Heat Pump Retrofit Best Practices Training

Overview

Air‑source heat pumps (ASHPs) are a key technology for improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in buildings. Achieving optimal performance in retrofit applications requires adherence to established best practices, including accurate load calculations, appropriate airflow design and proper system sizing.

This is a live, instructor‑led online course focused on ASHP retrofit best practices. Through guided instruction, step-by-step demonstrations and structured use of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) tools, participants gain a strong understanding of how these principles are applied in real‑world residential retrofit scenarios.

The course content is developed using technical resources from the Leadership in Energy Efficiency Partnerships (LEEP) team at CanmetENERGY-Ottawa, NRCan and the initial pilot delivery is fully funded by LEEP.

Who should take this course

This course is designed for:

  • HVAC students and emerging workforce participants
  • Apprentices and early‑career professionals
  • Industry professionals (such as Energy Advisors, HVAC designers and HVAC Contractors) seeking to strengthen their understanding of ASHP retrofit best practices

What you’ll gain

By participating in this course, you’ll gain:

  • Exposure to NRCan developed best practices for air source heat pump retrofits used across the Canadian HVAC sector
  • A strong understanding of retrofit design considerations, including load calculations, airflow concepts and system sizing
  • Experience working with NRCan’s ASHP sizing and selection web app in guided, real world scenarios
  • Greater confidence in applying best practice approaches when supporting or carrying out ASHP retrofit work
  • Insight into industry expectations for energy efficient heat pump installations in residential retrofits

As a pilot offering, you’ll also have the opportunity to help shape future delivery of ASHP best practices training by sharing feedback on the course experience.
