A day in the life of an NSCC Public Relations student

Get to know an NSCC Public Relations student

Name: Brooklyn
Program: Public Relations
Campus: Ivany Campus
Class: 2026

Why did you choose the Public Relations program?

I chose Public Relations because it blends writing, communication and relationship building. It’s fast-paced, people-focused work which is the type of environment I thrive in. I wanted a program that would challenge me creatively while giving me skills I can use right away. Plus, the program is 1 year long and packed with opportunities for work experience before graduation.

What's your favourite part about studying at NSCC?

My favourite part is how hands-on everything is. You’re not just sitting in a classroom learning theory – you’re applying it by working with real clients throughout the year. Classes are collaborative and you can feel that everyone genuinely wants you to succeed. It feels like a community.

What surprised you most about the PR program?

I was surprised by how much PR is about people. Everything comes back to understanding what people need, how they communicate and building meaningful connections. Every week in this program feels different in the best way.

What does a typical day look like in the PR program?

A typical day in the PR program includes a mix of classes, group projects and assignments. Some days I’m writing media materials or developing campaign plans, while other days I’m brainstorming with classmates or preparing presentations. There’s always something to create, critique or collaborate on. The structure keeps you engaged and moving forward.

What skills do you need to work in PR?

PR is both creative and analytical, requiring a diverse skill set. With guidance from our faculty, we build strengths in writing, digital literacy, public speaking, interpersonal communication, multitasking, time management and staying calm under pressure. Above all, we learn the value of clear, effective communication.

What industries hire PR professionals?

Public Relations grads can work in a variety of roles, including PR agencies, government, non-profits, corporate communications, health and wellness, sports and more. You could even pursue freelance communications. There are many exciting career opportunities.

Do you need experience before applying to PR?

You don’t need PR experience to apply. NSCC admission requires a diploma or degree, or high school plus five years of work experience. You’ll also submit a portfolio, and the program gives you lots of hands‑on practice to build your skills.

What’s your plan after you graduate?

After graduation, I hope to work in a role that combines creativity with strategy - ideally at a PR agency or an organization with a strong community focus. Long term, I’d love to build a career in communications rooted in relationship-building and storytelling.
