Sydney, NS – Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) and Nova Scotia Power will host an on-campus event at the Sydney Waterfront Campus to mark the launch of a new Power and Utility Line Work program in Cape Breton, addressing workforce demand in the province’s energy sector.

The event will feature the formal transfer of a Nova Scotia Power bucket truck for exclusive training use – now part of the program’s hands-on training environment – a key investment supporting skilled trades education in the region.

Date: Wednesday, February 4, 2026
Time: 11 am – 12 noon
Location: Atrium, NSCC Sydney Waterfront Campus, 500 Esplanade Street, Sydney, Nova Scotia

What media will see:
  • Remarks from NSCC and Nova Scotia Power leadership
  • Remarks from a class representative from the new SWC Campus Utility Line Work program section
  • Tour of training room as well as pole yard
  • Demonstration in the campus training pole yard and opportunity to check out a bucket truck (weather permitting)
  • Nova Scotia Power bucket truck positioned on site

The inaugural cohort of 30 students begins their program today (Feb. 2). The one-year certificate program is new to the Sydney Waterfront Campus and is delivered through a partnership with Nova Scotia Power and Connect Atlantic Utility Services.

The pilot program includes a significant industry investment and the development of dedicated training facilities – including a full pole yard at Nova Scotia Power’s Sydney Depot and an on-campus training yard. The expansion is helping address urgent workforce needs while creating opportunities for people to train and build careers in Cape Breton.

Media availability will follow the remarks.
