NSCC President announces he is stepping down, moving to new role
Sep. 09, 2025 – Media Release
Halifax, N.S. - After 15 years at the helm, Nova Scotia Community College’s (NSCC) President and Chief Executive Officer, Don Bureaux, has announced he has accepted a new leadership opportunity. His final day at the College will be February 27, 2026. He will transition into his new role as President and CEO of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce in March 2026.
The College’s Board of Governors will begin the process of searching for a new president and CEO during this time. Details regarding the search process will be developed in the weeks ahead.
Don joined NSCC in 2004 and served in various roles, including principal and Vice President, Academic, before being chosen to serve as president in 2011. With a background in entrepreneurship, business and post-secondary education, he immediately connected with the power and impact of community college education. Don has worked tirelessly to make sure NSCC was recognized throughout the province and the country as a first-choice post-secondary option for students and a preferred partner for employers, communities, and governments at all levels.
During Don’s 15 years as President, he has overseen successive strategic plans that emphasized learning, equity, safety and sustainability, innovation and public accountability. In partnership with the NSCC Foundation, he championed successful multi-million-dollar giving campaigns, the results of which have been focused on removing and reducing barriers to make learning more accessible, welcoming and inclusive. Don’s presidency included a period of substantial and impactful infrastructure expansion as well, including the new Sydney Waterfront Campus and the building and modernization of student housing at five campuses (plus four more in development stages).
“While we’re sorry to see Don leave a role he has cherished, we are thankful for the impact he has made at the College over his two decades of dedicated service,” says Jackie Poirier, Chair, NSCC Board of Governors. “We have no doubt that Don will work just as tirelessly in his new leadership position at the Chamber to ensure Halifax and Nova Scotia are recognized at home and abroad for the innovative entrepreneurs and skilled workforce that are essential for economic development and prosperity.
“Over the next six months, I will remain focused on the critical work ahead,” says President Don Bureaux. “In looking back at my time at the College, I have been honoured to be surrounded by some 2,000 staff members at our campuses across the province, all dedicated to the success of our more than 10,000 students who come to study at NSCC each year. It has been a remarkable privilege to witness the individual transformations of students who have grown during their time at the College, knowing the difference they will make in their field and community. I am certain my connection to the College will remain strong given the alignment our mission has with the important work of the Chamber.”
