About the Position

We are looking for home care providers for a 57-year-old male living with mid-stage young onset dementia (YOD).

The client is living at home (close to Dalhousie University) with his spouse, two children (aged 12 and 16), and two cats. The client is physically active, but needs consistent cues, behavioural redirection for frustration, confusion, and repetitive behaviours, and supervision of daily routines.

We are looking for someone with the ability to provide consistent compassion and patience, and the ability to maintain professional boundaries while remaining friendly and calm. 

Responsibilities/ core duties

  • Direct companionship – Engagement in tailored activities including but not limited to walks and other outings, frisbee, biking, workout with weights (possibly at Dalplex), reading, playing or listening to music, going to the grocery store or other simple errands.
  • Prompts and reminders – Gentle reminders for dressing (e.g. take off shoes in the house, put on tuque to go outside), hygiene (e.g. wash your hands), hydration, and other small tasks.
  • Meal/ snack preparation – Preparation and serving of snacks and meals, including lunches and occasionally dinner; as well as clean up after all activities. Given the number of people living in the house, some additional clean up may be expected.
  • Safety checks – Ensuring that the house and people living in it are safe. This includes e.g. ensure stove is off, lights are turned off (constant checks needed), doors are closed, and similar checks.

  • Start date: September 1, 2025 (flexible) 
  • End date: December 31, 2025 (extension possible) 
  • Location: Private home, within 10 mins of Dalhousie University
  • Hours: 10 to 25 hours per week, flexible schedule, with mostly daytime hours and some evenings, in 3-5 hour shifts. 

Qualifications

  • A compassionate, patient, and understanding approach to care is required.
  • Previous training, education, or experience with dementia care (Alzheimer’s) would be a strong asset. Examples of training or education include: kinesiology, health and human performance, social work, leisure studies, personal support work, health care aide, or other related disciplines).
  • The home respite care provider will work as part of a team in shifts, ongoing communication about needs and behaviours is expected.
  • We aim for the caregivers to establish a strong rapport with the client, others in the family (including cats) and one another.
  • It is impossible to predict whom the client will accept as a caregiver, and we would schedule a week or two of trial periods.
