Operational Health and Safety Coordinator:

The Operational Health and Safety Coordinator will report to GIT’s Operations and People Manager

Job Overview:

As GIT Operational Health and Safety Coordinator you will play a critical role in ensuring that our organization maintains a safe and healthy work environment for its employees, visitors, and other stakeholders. We are currently looking for the right candidate to complete a 1 year maternity leave. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

The Operational Health and Safety Coordinator, at GIT, is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring health and safety programs and policies within the organization. The Operational Health and Safety Coordinator will work to minimize the risk of accidents, injuries, and illnesses in the workplace. It is the vision of GIT that the incumbent will promote the well-being of employees and ensure compliance with all Regulatory Standards and Occupational best practices.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Policy Development: Develop, gain consensus, revise, and implement health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with municipal, provincial, and federal regulations. Ensure that these policies are communicated and understood by all employees with effective and measured validation.
  • Compliance: Monitor compliance with health and safety laws and regulations and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation. Ensure that the organization meets or exceeds these standards.
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify potential safety and health risks in the workplace. Develop strategies to mitigate or eliminate these risks.
  • Training and Education: Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees on safety procedures, emergency protocols, and the proper use of safety equipment. Keep records of all documented training sessions and employee certifications.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses to determine their root causes. Develop and implement corrective and preventive measures to avoid reoccurrence and manage within the Quality Management System.
  • Emergency Response Planning: Develop emergency response plans for various scenarios, including fires, natural disasters, and other crises. Ensure that employees are aware of these plans and conduct drills as needed to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Safety Inspections: Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify safety hazards and compliance issues. Work with department heads and employees to rectify these issues and validate the effectiveness of control plans.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of safety-related incidents, inspections, and training. Prepare reports for management on a Weekly basis and regulatory agencies as required or directed.
  • Safety Committee: Collaborate with the safety committee or other relevant teams to address safety concerns and initiatives, ensuring a cross-functional approach to safety management with effective report outs.
  • Continuous Improvement: Develop and continuously assess and improve safety programs and procedures. Stay up to date with industry best practices and technological advancements in safety and communicate these to Management

 

Qualifications

  • Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., Certified Safety Professional or equivalent is preferred)
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Problem Solving Tools such as 5P, YY, PFMEA,8D, Control Plans, One Page Plans.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

 

Knowledge of or willingness to receive Training in:

Experience

  • Prior industry experience is considered an asset

Specific Skills

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office software, ability to read basic measuring instruments and carry out basic arithmetic operations.
