About the Position

The ideal candidate will have a friendly and approachable demeanour and possess a non-judgmental attitude with the ability to empathize. The individual should possess competence, and a passion to help.

This is an excellent opportunity for students working in the field of social services to gain some hours and experience. Also, this is an ideal job for those who are commuting to NSCC through the day/week and would like compensation such as wages, room, board, and meals to offset the commute.

The role of the Shelter Support Worker will include but is not limited to:

Providing a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment to clients.Spending overnights in the shelter with clients.

Spending time with the residents throughout the day, particularly during weekends, doing various recreation or other activities.

Semi-flexible schedule to be determined with Executive Director.

Activities could include in-house activities such as paint or craft nights, hair and make-up nights, games, and a variety of other fun community building activities.

Out-of-house activities could include fitness activities, RECC center, or arts and culture exhibitions.

Dispensing medication and logging appropriately.

Transition note-taking at the end of shifts.

Contribute to meeting the personal, physical, emotional, psycho-social needs of the clients in a holistic approach.

Model positive behaviour and maintain good relations with clients and staff/volunteers by communicating in a supportive, and respectful manner while maintaining confidentiality.

Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the house along with residents.

Responsibilities:

Must be reliable and mature.

Must have excellent verbal, written, listening skills and commitment to maintain confidentiality. 

Must have the ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations. 

Ability to deescalate conflict in a professional and effective manner. 

Ability to clearly communicate rules to ensure positive, constructive environment within the shelter. 

Must be adaptable to change.

Other duties and requirements may be asked of the successful applicant

Qualifications

*Caring, empathetic individual with heart for helping

*Human Services Diploma or other related post secondary education, or working towards a degree preferred but not necessary

*Relevant work experience preferred. Minimum 2 years

*A combination of education and experience will be considered for this position.

*A criminal record check and vulnerable sector check is required
