WEEKEND OVERNIGHT WORKER (50%), PHOENIX HOUSE

PART-TIME, PERMANENT

START DATE: AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Program: Phoenix House is a ten-bed long-term residential facility for youth aged 16-24. It offers safe, supportive housing for youth while learning skills for independent living.  

Compensation: $22.75/hour plus 4% vacation pay, Employee and Family Assistance Program, in-house trainings.  

Hours of Work: 40 hours every second week: Fridays from 11:30pm to 7:40 am and Saturdays from 7:40pm to 7:40am.  

Location: Phoenix House, Hunter Street  

Reports to: Manager, Phoenix House  

Screening Requirements: Due to the sensitive nature of our work with youth, this position is subject to a satisfactory criminal record check including a vulnerable sector search, a child abuse register check and proof of education.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure the program is congruent with Phoenix’s vision and values.
  • Work in accordance with Phoenix’s policies, procedures, and framework of practice.
  • Supervise and monitor Phoenix House’s weekend and overnight activities and ensure that policies, security, and safety are maintained.
  • Work with youth to support the implementation of effective case plans that address the challenges of youth who experience homelessness.
  • Provide support and crisis intervention for youth.
  • Assist with engaging youth in life skill development and goal planning opportunities that support independent living.
  • Provide a supportive environment that promotes youth empowerment.
  • Complete nightly or weekly medication counts as required.
  • Work as a team with other weekend staff and provide support and guidance to relief staff as needed.
  • Complete and maintain all logs, files and records as required and ensure confidentiality is protected.
  • Contribute to building maintenance to ensure a therapeutic milieu.
  • Support program development, including attendance at biweekly team meetings, and ensure that a quality effective and client directed program is delivered.
  • Train new staff, field placement students and volunteers as required.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development and personal reflection towards an anti-oppressive approach to practice.
  • Liaise with other agencies on behalf of youth and programs and participate in community committees, projects, or activities as appropriate.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated high level of understanding of youth development and the issues of homelessness.
  • Demonstrated exceptional level of interpersonal, communication, youth service and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated skill using anti-oppressive practice (harm reduction, narrative practice, a client-directed approach, and a social justice perspective).
  • Knowledge of mental health issues, substance abuse and crisis intervention.
  • Comfort and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Outlook and using the Internet.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and the social service delivery system is an asset.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Social Work, or an undergraduate degree and Human Services diploma or other relevant undergraduate degree, (or working towards).
  • Registration or Candidacy for Registration, certification, or membership of a related professional body (if applicable).
  • Experience working in a youth residential setting.
  • Non-violent crisis intervention, suicide intervention, standard first aid training, and naloxone or a commitment to secure those requirements within six months of being hired.
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization is an asset.
