New scholarships for African Nova Scotian students

PREP Academy partners with NSCC to offer $16,000 in alumni support

May. 06, 2022 – Media Release

Halifax, NS – The NSCC Foundation is partnering with The PREP Academy to offer $16,000 in scholarships to African Nova Scotian students who attended the academy and will be attending Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) in fall 2022.

The PREP Academy is an organization that works to prepare African Nova Scotian high school students for college and university through career, professional and personal development programs and initiatives.

Through the new PREP Academy Possibilities Award, alumni of The PREP Academy can now apply for one of four, new $4,000 entrance awards.

“At NSCC, we strive to be an anti-racist college,” says Jill Provoe, NSCC Acting Vice President, Academic. “This partnership helps us increase access to education for African Nova Scotian students by tackling some of the financial obstacles they face. By removing systemic barriers in this way, we ensure that everyone feels a sense of belonging and can achieve their best. In turn, their lives can be transformed through education.”

Scholarships will be awarded to confirmed, full-time students enrolled in their first year of a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or graduate certificate program at any NSCC campus. Applicants must outline their career aspirations, as well as demonstrate leadership and community involvement.

“These scholarships not only help reward African Nova Scotian students' performance, they also help build generational wealth in their communities by reducing stifling financial student debt,” says Malik Adams, Vice Chair, The PREP Academy.

Confirmed applicants can apply at nscc.ca/awards. The deadline to apply is June 1, 2022.
