16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence

"16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence" is an annual campaign that runs from November 25 to December 10. This campaign begins on the "International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women" and ends on "Human Rights Day". In Canada, December 6 is observed as the "National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women". This is the difficult anniversary that honours the 14 women killed in 1989 at the Polytechnique in Montreal in an act of gender-based violence.

To help support education and awareness, NSCC Libraries has partnered with Juniper House to share the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence collection which includes resources for each of the 16 days of action. The titles in this collection explore the topic of intimate partner violence with voices from Indigenous, Black, Palestinian, and 2SLBGTQ+ communities. Some titles offer practical advice for people experiencing intimate partner violence, their families, and the people who work with them. All of the titles are available as e-Books and will be highlighted in displays at your campus library.

Holding space for this remembrance is especially important when you consider the fact that 1 in 3 women are affected by gender-based violence. The United Nations organization, UN Women, has declared violence against women and girls a "global human rights emergency" (UN Women, n.d.). Unite to End Digital Violence is the theme for this year’s16 Days campaign. When you see purple ribbons showing up on campus, consider taking the opportunity to read a book and learn more about this important topic.
