On March 26th the Ivany Campus Book Club, facilitated by the Campus Library, had a live Q&A with local author and librarian Elliott Gish about her debut novel Grey Dog.

The novel is set in 1901 and follows Ada Byrd, a young woman with a keen interest in nature who has been pushed into the isolated life as a schoolteacher in the rural town of Lowry Bridge. Hoping this is an opportunity to start new in a place where no one knows her past, she begins to develop a new life. But soon she starts witnessing strange natural phenomena happening around her.

During the author’s visit she read a small excerpt from the novel, followed by a question period with the Campus Librarian. They spoke about the epistolary format of the novel, themes of isolation and rage, and how the life and work of Lucy Maud Montgomery was hugely influential in her work.

When asked about other titles she would recommend to readers who enjoyed Grey Dog, Elliott suggested the film The Witch (2016) as the two have similar themes and pacing. Watch The Witch on NSCC Libraries' Criterion-on-Demand streaming video collection.
