Honouring Don Bureaux’s legacy of leadership and care
For 15 years, NSCC President Don Bureaux has led the College with clarity, compassion and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. Don’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping not only NSCC’s growth, but also a culture where philanthropy, partnership and student success are deeply connected.
As Don embarks on his new professional chapter, we are grateful for his legacy, defined by people and community with a shared commitment to impact and innovation.
A leader guided by community
Don joined NSCC more than two decades ago, serving in several senior roles before being appointed president in 2011. He recognized the unique role community colleges play in strengthening provinces and changing lives.
Those who worked alongside him often describe Don as action-oriented and deeply grounded in purpose. He brought an entrepreneurial mindset to the College, seeing opportunities where others saw barriers and ensuring NSCC remained closely connected to the evolving needs of communities, industry and learners.
For the Foundation, Don’s belief in community partnership was critical. He understood that philanthropy is not separate from education; it is a catalyst that helps remove barriers and expand access for learners across Nova Scotia.
Leading with care, compassion and courage
Throughout his presidency, Don fostered a culture rooted in care and trust. He encouraged innovation at the grassroots level, knowing that some of NSCC’s most transformative ideas begin on campus, shaped by the people closest to students.
He also championed meaningful relationships with Mi’kmaq communities, building trust long before reconciliation became a national priority. His leadership helped ensure Indigenous learners could see themselves reflected within NSCC and feel welcomed and supported.
Don often spoke of service as a privilege and reminded leaders they were custodians of the heart and soul of the College. That belief shaped how NSCC showed up for students and communities — with empathy, humility and resolve.
A lasting legacy for students
One of Don’s most enduring contributions to NSCC Foundation was his leadership in the College’s first capital campaign, Make Way. The campaign exceeded its goal, raising more than $33 million to reduce barriers to education and make learning more accessible, inclusive and welcoming.
In recognition of his commitment to students and to the College, the NSCC Foundation Board of Directors has established The Don Bureaux Legacy of Impact Endowment. Through this endowment, Don’s legacy of leadership and care will continue supporting students, strengthening communities and ensuring opportunity remains at the centre of NSCC’s mission.
We are deeply grateful for Don’s leadership, partnership and belief in the power of education. Please join us in continuing his legacy of opening doors for learners across Nova Scotia for generations to come.
