Blessing’s journey: From challenges to hope
Starting over in a new country
After 13 years as a teacher, Blessing Amaniampong came to Nova Scotia from Ghana to pursue NSCC’s Disability Supports and Services program at Sydney Waterfront Campus. “I have a strong passion for helping others, especially people with disabilities who often face barriers to inclusion and independence,” says Blessing. “There are very few programs in Ghana that focus on supporting individuals with disabilities,” leading him to Nova Scotia to pursue his passion.
“What I like most about the program is that it teaches practical skills and strategies to make a real difference in people’s lives,” Blessing says, reflecting on his program learning. “It allows me to learn practical skills to promote dignity, empowerment and equal opportunities for everyone.”
Returning to school as a mature student in a new country wasn’t easy. “Adjusting to the environment was challenging, especially the cold weather,” Blessing shares. “It was also emotionally difficult to leave my family behind. But I’m proud of myself for taking this step.”
Facing food insecurity and finding support
During Blessing’s journey, he faced financial difficulties. “There were times when I went to school on an empty stomach,” he says. “I wasn’t eating properly, and it added stress to my daily life.” He relied on the Sydney Waterfront Campus Pantry for food and supplies, which helped him manage during difficult times.
When things became overwhelming, Blessing applied for support from NSCC Urgent Aid. “I was experiencing financial difficulties with groceries, rent and transportation,” he explains. “The assistance helped me stay focused in class without constantly worrying about my basic needs. It truly made a positive difference.”
Receiving Urgent Aid was a turning point. “I was overjoyed,” Blessing says. “It was a huge relief and allowed me to concentrate on my studies. I’m so grateful for that support.”

“My journey at NSCC has been life-changing, and I am truly grateful for all the support I have received from sponsors, faculty, employees, classmates and school programs,” says Blessing. “Coming to a new country was not easy, but the kindness and encouragement I have experienced here has helped me grow, stay focused and believe in myself.”
