Creating career connections

Career fairs and student competitions are helping NSCC students across the province make industry connections and showcase their skills to future employers. Thanks to NSCC's event sponsors and industry partners, the College hosted four events from January to March to help students from various programs prepare for the next steps in their careers.

2024 Marine Skills Competition and Career Fair

On March 6-7, NSCC's Strait Area Nautical Institute hosted its 2024 Marine Skills Competition and Career Fair with presenting sponsor Cooke Aquaculture.

On day one, the Marine Skills Competition took place, where four teams of students from the Institute's Marine Engineering, Marine Navigation, and Bridge Watch Rating programs competed in a series of skill-testing challenges to help develop leadership skills and confidence. That evening students, instructors, and industry partners gathered at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre after the competition for the gala celebration. Day two of the event was the Marine Career Fair, where cadets had the opportunity to meet with companies from across Canada, and on-site interviews took place for the students' upcoming sea placements.

10th Annual Information Technology Job Fair and Conference

On February 20, NSCC successfully hosted its 10th Annual Information Technology (IT) Job Fair at Pier 21 in Halifax. At the job fair, 600 IT students across NSCC’s campuses had access to professional development, networking, and career opportunities with 50 companies represented to make connections and learn more about potential employers, professional associations and programs.

To prepare the students for their graduate job search, the fair also offered career-related programming with speed interviews, industry connector programs, profile picture booths, resume reviews and feedback and portfolio presentations.

Tech Connect

On February 1 NSCC's Truro Campus successfully hosted NSCC TechConnection 2024. The event, partially sponsored by NSCC Alumni Relations, provided an opportunity for IT students to connect with industry partners through workshops, portfolio reviews, and an engaging panel discussion with four IT programming alumni.

COGs Career Fair

On January 22-23, with sponsorship from NSCC Alumni Relations, NSCC's Centre of Geographical Sciences (COGS) Campus hosted its annual COGS Industry Expo. This event showcased COGS's unique program offerings while providing opportunities for current and potential students, faculty, alumni, and industry leaders to network and connect. This year, the Expo had its largest turnout, with 40 employers in attendance.
