A direct impact

NSCC donors and supporters are passionate about supporting students at the College by providing financial aid that alleviates stress and motivates them to push forward. Many donors have dedicated their awards to Black and African Nova Scotian students at the College to provide supports to help overcome the barriers they may face in post-secondary education.

Showing gratitude

Below are some of NSCC's awards that are making a difference for Black and African Nova Scotian students. Read more about the awards and the impact they've made from their recipients, who have shown profound gratitude for having access to the support they need to pursue their dreams.

Black and African Nova Scotian Immediate Needs Fund

Through donor funding, the Black and African Nova Scotian Immediate Needs Fund was established to meet the urgent financial needs of Black and African Nova Scotian students at NSCC. When faced with an urgent financial situation impacting their education, students can access the fund through a Black and African Nova Scotian Student Advisor at the College to get the support they need.

"I want to express my sincere gratitude for being a recipient of the Black and African Nova Scotian Immediate Need Fund. Growing up, I didn't have very many people to support me. So, it makes me even more grateful that you chose to do so. I'll take a kind action like this as motivation to push forward to reach my goals." – Dreamera C., 2023 Recipient, Black and African Nova Scotian Immediate Needs Fund, Adult Learning Program, Kingstec Campus.

New awards in honour of Black and African Nova Scotian community leaders

The Black and African Nova Scotian Employee Resource Network at NSCC created four new awards for Black and African Nova Scotian students, three of which are named in honour of community leaders. Alongside the Ujima Award, the Deanna Mohamed, Chester Borden, and Rocky Jones Community Leadership Awards were launched last year to honour the leaders' community impact and continue their legacy through student support.

"Thank you so much to Deanna and the selection committee for making this opportunity available. This award will be life-changing for me, and I appreciate being the one selected out of all the deserving candidates to receive it."
Brittany B., 2023 Recipient, The Deanna Mohamed Community Leadership Award, Business Administration, Pictou Campus.

Daurene Lewis Memorial Award

The Daurene Lewis Memorial Award was established in 2021 to honour Daurene Lewis' incredible life and career, which she dedicated to fighting the injustice that Black and African Nova Scotians faced throughout history. As a descendant of Black Loyalists, Canada's first Black female mayor, and a human rights activist, this award continues Daurene's legacy.

"This award will impact my schooling immensely because I am a single Black woman trying to hold my life together by myself. I’m grateful to receive your donation because it lightens the burden. My ancestors instill unto me to give back, so when I am off for the summer, I'll give back to my community." – Sabrina S., 2023 Recipient, Daurene Lewis Memorial Award, Early Childhood Education, eCampus
