NSCC gave its all this Food for All Fall

Giving Tuesday banner featuring fresh produce in paper bags with text “Giving Tuesday” and a blue circle reading “Seasons of Giving: Food for All Fall.” Promotes NSCC Foundation’s campaign to fight student food insecurity.

A season of generosity

Food insecurity is a growing barrier for NSCC students, with 53% reporting low or very low food security in the 2023 Canadian Campus Wellbeing Survey. This fall, NSCC Foundation set out to address this challenge by launching Seasons of Giving: Food for All Fall — a province-wide fundraising campaign for NSCC’s Rapid Response Fund. The College’s community of donors and supporters helped ensure students have access to a variety of supports that address food insecurity, including on-campus food programs, Cost of Living Bursaries and our grocery gift card program.

Giving Tuesday, the global day of giving

On Tuesday, December 2, NSCC and post-secondary institutions across Nova Scotia rallied together for the fifth consecutive year to focus on this growing student need during the world’s largest generosity movement. Partnering with the J & W Murphy Foundation, who matched donations up to $10,000 for NSCC, our community doubled its impact to help students facing food insecurity.

The impact you made

The response was extraordinary. Together, NSCC’s community raised $70,000 for Rapid Response and food security initiatives this fall, with $13,000 raised for Giving Tuesday — surpassing our $10,000 goal. More than 170 donors stepped up throughout Giving Tuesday to help students access food for themselves and their families, joining our caring community of supporters.

The Season of Giving also inspired creative initiatives like Ivany Campus’s Feed Our Future Food Drive Telethon, planned and hosted by students in the Radio Television Journalism (RTJ) program. Students hosted a livestream through the Campus’s WTV Media and live broadcast on CCKC, the Campus’s radio station, complete with a visit from Santa, musical performances by NSCC students and a reading by Meaghan Smith from her new children’s book “It Snowed”. The RTJ students and the campus community raised an impressive $1,900 for the Ivany Campus Food Security Fund and collected enough donations to fill the shelves of the Campus’s food bank.

The generosity of our community this Season of Giving will be felt throughout the academic year, helping students access groceries, healthy meals and additional food security supports when they need it most.

Our gratitude

Thank you for joining NSCC Foundation this Season of Giving and ensuring there’s enough food for all. Together, we’ve made a lasting impact and look forward to spending our next Season of Giving with you.
