Fighting food insecurity at NSCC
Keeping students fed and focused
Food insecurity continues to be a rising issue across the province. Being food insecure is a stressor as students worry where their next meal will come from and if they can afford it. To focus on doing the best in their classes, staying fed and healthy is necessary for students, both physically and mentally.
Across NSCC campuses, there are various food security initiatives happening in collaboration with communities to increase resources for students. Featured below are a few examples of these initiatives, including how you can donate online to any NSCC campus food bank.
IT Campus - Food Drive Challenge and Pipe Trades Christmas Decoration Sale
NSCC’s Institute of Technology Campus (IT) has two food security initiatives underway. Currently, all Campus and Central staff are participating in a team food drive challenge to support its Student Food Pantry. In 2022, the challenge brought in 2,027 items to the food pantry. The Campus is hoping to surpass that amount this year, the deadline for contributions is December 18.
Additionally, Pipe Trades students are joining the efforts by selling Christmas décor they made to donate and donating their profits to the Campus’ food pantry.
Kingstec Campus community food drive
As a part of student service-learning projects at NSCC’s Kingstec Campus, students worked with the Fundy Interchurch Food Bank and hosted a bi-weekly food drive from November 18 to December 14. Using the Campus’ parking lot as a community drop-off for donations, students hosted seven drop-offs to support the church’s food bank.
Annapolis Valley Campus (AVC) Haunted House
At AVC, the Campus Enactus team and Student Association partnered to transform Pilikan House into a Haunted House experience over Halloween to fight food insecurity. Charging $5 or two non-perishable food items for admission, they raised over $400 and some non-perishable goods for students.
Burridge Food Pantry Program
In Yarmouth at NSCC’s Burridge Campus, the Burridge Food Pantry Program received $6,700 in financial support from Coastal Financial Credit Union, Scott Lutz from the Co-operators Insurance Services and the Yarmouth Rotary Club to fight food insecurity at the Campus.
Giving Tuesday 2023
For Giving Tuesday on November 28, our community rallied together to raise funds for Rapid Response, funding cost of living bursaries and food security initiatives at NSCC. Thanks to your incredible support, $15,500 was raised alongside the J & W Murphy Foundation’s generous $10,000 donation match, raising a grand total of $25,500 to directly support NSCC students. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity.
