Shayna Halliday's Story

A guide uses ASL to lead a group of students through a tour inside a building at Gallaudet University.
From March 23 to 28, our ASL/English Interpretation class at Nova Scotia Community College took an unforgettable trip to Washington, D.C., to visit the iconic Gallaudet University; A dream destination for anyone passionate about Deaf culture and language.

Stepping onto Gallaudet’s campus felt like entering a place where ASL was not just a subject, but the heartbeat of everyday life. We were surrounded by Deaf students, professors, and professionals, and it was both humbling and inspiring to experience the vibrancy of a fully signing environment.

Throughout the week, we attended campus tours, sat in on lectures, and engaged in rich conversations with students and faculty. Seeing the intersection of language, identity, and advocacy in action made everything we’ve been learning come alive in a powerful way.

Beyond the university, we explored the beautiful landmarks of D.C., from the Lincoln Memorial to various Museums, all while bonding as classmates and future interpreters.

This trip deepened our appreciation for Deaf culture and reminded us why we chose this path. We’re coming home more connected, more motivated, and more proud to be part of this incredible field. Thank you, Gallaudet, for the warm welcome and to the NSCC Foundation and Student Association for making this trip possible!
