Keira Hewson's Story

Group of students smiling on a corridor during a visit to Gallaudet University.
Our class trip to Gallaudet University was a great one! We travelled to Washington, D.C., where the only Deaf university in the world, established in 1864, still stands and serves Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in their desired vocations.

GU welcomed us, interpreting students, to sit in on a few lectures, chat with students, and learn some new things along the way. Even outside the classroom, we were invited to practice our interpreting skills at a national sporting event! We participated in many activities that were valuable to our learning and schema-building practices, which will serve us well in the “real world” of interpreting.

We couldn’t have had this amazing opportunity without the generous support of the NSCC Foundation, NSCC’s Student Association, as well as our peers, family, and friends who have supported our journey thus far. We thank you!
