Emmalyn Fraser's Story

Emmalyn Fraser in Costa Rica for the Indigenous Learning Program
Over the past week, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in an Indigenous Learning Program in Costa Rica. This journey was more than just a trip—it was a deeply personal experience that allowed me to reconnect with my culture in ways I never expected. For the first time in my life, I felt truly safe and supported in embracing who I am as an Indigenous person, surrounded by an amazing group of people who shared in this experience with me.
One of the most meaningful parts of this program was learning not only from fellow Indigenous people from Canada but also from the Indigenous community of Boruca in Costa Rica. Their stories, traditions, and resilience resonated deeply with me. Witnessing their dedication to preserving their culture and passing down their knowledge was both inspiring and humbling. It reminded me of the importance of keeping our own traditions alive, even in the face of challenges.
Through storytelling, traditional crafts, and immersive experiences, I gained a new perspective on Indigenous identity and the strength that comes from shared knowledge. The Boruca people welcomed us with open hearts, sharing their wisdom, art, and way of life. Their deep connection to the land and their commitment to cultural preservation made me reflect on my own journey and the ways I can honor and embrace my heritage.
I have never been more grateful for an experience in my life. This program gave me the courage to explore my identity in a way I never had before. It showed me the power of community, the beauty of Indigenous knowledge, and the importance of reclaiming and celebrating our roots. I return home with a renewed sense of pride and a commitment to continuing this journey of learning and connection.
I hope to share what I’ve learned with others and encourage those who may feel disconnected from their culture to seek out opportunities like this. The experience of being surrounded by understanding, supportive individuals and immersing myself in Indigenous traditions has been life-changing. I will carry this experience with me forever.
