We also had the opportunity to explore some of Washington, D.C.'s most meaningful landmarks. At the Holocaust Museum, we moved through powerful exhibits that offered a sobering look at history and human rights. At the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, we explored the history of aviation and space exploration. We spent some time interpreting the exhibits for practice, which was a
challenge. I loved watching the planetarium; it felt like we were actually there. We stood in front of the Abraham Lincoln statue, honouring the president who signed Gallaudet's charter, which was a moment I won't forget.
One of the highlights of the trip was attending an interpreter happy hour, where we met working interpreters from around the D.C. area. It was a truly valuable experience to hear their stories, ask questions, and gain honest insight into the profession. That casual setting made it easy to connect, and I walked away feeling both supported and motivated.
Another unexpected but wonderful part of the trip was staying together in an Airbnb. Sharing that space allowed us to connect on a more personal level. We had late-night chats, cooked meals together, and reflected on the day's experiences. It brought us closer as a group, and those connections will stay with us as we enter this field.
Being able to say that I went to Gallaudet University and experienced it first-hand allows me to form deeper connections within the community. It is a central point for the Deaf community, and so many people have been a part of the Gallaudet community. Who knows, maybe one day I'll go back to join the community and do my master's?
