Young Africa Works in Kenya-TVET Phase 2 TVET-19 (Aquaculture and Fisheries)

Project/Initiative

Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) is partnering with the Mastercard Foundation to implement the Young Africa Works-Kenya: Youth Employability through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Young Africa Works in Kenya-TVET) in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE), other relevant Government of Kenya agencies, and the private sector.

YAW-K-TVET builds on CICan’s experience and leadership in the Kenyan TVET sector and current initiatives such as the Kenya Education for Employment Program (KEFEP).

Young Africa Works in Kenya-TVET seeks to address key remaining gaps including the implementation of a full pathway system to allow for lateral and horizontal progression in the TVET system, full implementation of a national Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) system, an effective Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) system, a significant scale-up of TVET trainer training and continuous professional development, and a significant enhancement of gender equality and safe spaces at TVET institutions.

Nova Scotia Community College, Fisheries and Marine Institute and Seneca College will work with the local partners on launching existing approved CBET courses and/or developing and launching new courses in aquaculture and fisheries.

Services provided

• Launch gender-responsive and industry relevant CBET courses
• Expand employer engagement activities
• Facilitate trainer exchanges between Kenya and Canada
• Provide training to trainers delivering TVET curricula in the targeted sectors

Results achieved

Completed the inception stage and initiated project activities.
