Webinar: Ecology and succession of White Spruce in Nova Scotia
Date: Jan. 30, 2026
White spruce occupies a unique ecological position in Nova Scotia, where the species sits near the southern edge of its boreal range. In this session of Webinar Wednesdays, registered professional forester and forest ecologist Peter Neily of Forest Resource Consultants Inc. explored how white spruce behaves across the Wabanaki–Acadian Forest Region and why its role in forest succession differs from what is observed elsewhere.
Drawing on regional research and field experience, Peter explained how white spruce can take on multiple ecological roles depending on site conditions, and how climate change may affect white spruce in the future.
While many models suggest the species could face negative impacts, Peter discussed how its phenotypic plasticity introduces uncertainty into long-term projections, raising important questions for forest management and planning.
