About the Position

The Zatzman Sportsplex, built in 1982, is a family-focused health, fitness, and recreation complex that serves Dartmouth’s communities and all regions of the Halifax Regional Municipality. The facility hosts a variety of facilities and services including a double gymnasium, a large fitness centre, community spaces, two swimming pools, an NHL sized arena with seating for 3,000 people, and so much more. In addition, the facility also sponsors a large-scale community outreach and accessibility program to reduce barriers and ensure that everyone in our community can play at the Sportsplex.

The Zatzman Sportsplex is seeking a skilled and knowledgeable Shift Operator to join our Operations Team. This position will report to the Chief Engineer and is responsible for operating and maintaining the mechanical systems used to provide heat, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC systems), maintaining and repairing pools, and the ice and refrigeration plant at the Sportsplex.

This position involves:

• Perform regular inspections of building systems and equipment to ensure optimal performance and identify potential issues.

• Operate the Zamboni to resurface the ice between events, ensuring a smooth and safe playing surface.

• Maintain ice quality by monitoring and adjusting temperature, humidity, and ice thickness.

• Conduct routine maintenance tasks, such as ice edging and ice painting.

• Conduct pool tests and adjust pool chemicals to ensure safe aquatic environments.

• Monitor pool pumps and filtration systems.

• Respond promptly to any emergencies or breakdowns of equipment.

• Assist in the setup and teardown of events, including the installation and removal of dasher boards, glass, and other equipment.

• Maintain accurate records of ice maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.

• Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and codes.

• Perform preventative maintenance on equipment in and around the facility.

 

Candidates must have a clean criminal record and be legally able to work in Canada.

Qualifications

Qualifications/Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification or vocational training in building operations, HVAC, or related fields is preferred.

• Experience as a Building Operator, Zamboni Driver, or in a similar role, demonstrating knowledge of building systems and ice maintenance.

• Previous experience working in an arena, pool or similar facility would be considered an asset.

• Understanding of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.

• Familiarity with computerized building automation systems (BAS) and energy management systems (EMS).

• Knowledge of relevant safety regulations and codes.

• Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Strong organizational and time management abilities.

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
