CONSERVATION INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for a Stewardship Intern to join a team committed to protecting our most important natural areas and the plants and animals they sustain. POSITION TITLE: NB STEWARDSHIP INTERN

LOCATION:  Fredericton, NB

NO. OF POSITIONS: 1 Work Week: 37.5 hours per week  

The Stewardship Intern will help NCC deliver its New Brunswick land stewardship program and engage the public in our on-the-ground stewardship work. The successful candidate will coordinate a series of volunteer working days and public outreach events on NCC lands. The Stewardship Intern will also work with other NCC interns to do hands-on fieldwork by monitoring, restoring, and caring for NCC’s conservation lands across New Brunswick. This position provides a balance of field work and office work and engaging hands-on with volunteers who share NCC’s passion for land conservation.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and run a series of workday events for volunteers held on NCC nature reserves.
  • Handle all event planning and administration including logistics, partner collaborations, participant registration / communication, and database management.
  • Participate in physical land management activities as an alternate member of the stewardship field team, including trail building, invasive species control, habitat monitoring, restoration work, and garbage removal, which may include camping and being away from Fredericton for several days.
  • Monitor NCC properties on foot to document observations and map property features.
  • Develop communication materials and use social / traditional media to promote events, including participating in media interviews (radio, tv, print).
  • Compile and manage data and write post-event reports. Represent NCC in a professional manner at public events.

Qualifications

This posting is targeted to students possessing the following skills:

  • University or college student preferably entering final year or recent graduate, with an interest or experience in ecology, natural history, conservation, geography etc.
  • Must be self-directed, able to work independently, have good time management skills and attention to detail, must meet deadlines.
  • Must also be able to get along well as a team that spends long hours together.
  • Experience working outdoors in challenging terrain and in all weather conditions, and able to do challenging physical tasks such as long days hiking, digging, lifting, etc.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, report writing.
  • Familiarity with common computer software (Microsoft Office Suite, graphics programs).
  • Fluency in English; bilingual in French a plus.
  • Wilderness or Standard First Aid training.
  • Ability to work on weekends.
  • Valid Driver’s License, and able to rent a car (must be at least 21 years of age to rent).    

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time, 16-week (May 8 – August 25, 2023) position. Salary is $18/hour ($675/week). Position will be based in Fredericton, NB, with travel throughout the province, with a small number of overnights and some weekend work. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. This position will require multi-day overnight trips in remote locations and camping. Some position funding may require the candidate to have been attending university or college and returning to school in the fall. Some position funding may require the candidate be aged 30 or under. For some positions preference to be given to applicants who identify as belonging to one or more of the following: women, indigenous, persons with disabilities, or visible minority. Candidates who wish to qualify for preferential consideration must self-identify.

Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
