About the Position

Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for 2 permanent full-time positions of Fleet Trades Person - Truck & Transport/Heavy Mechanic with Corporate Fleet - Property, Fleet, & Environment. Under the direction of a Municipal Fleet Supervisor, these positions are responsible for the maintenance and repair of medium and heavy trucks, attachments, and a variety of other municipal equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Receive, accept and complete work orders and assigned tasks through the use a computerized fleet maintenance system, ie Fleet Focus.

Diagnose, determine the source and extent of, and carry out, the necessary repairs to all types of equipment, diesel and gas engines, and hydraulic equipment contained in a major municipal fleet operation.

Carry out provincial motor vehicle inspections on fleet equipment.

Must be available for overtime or shift work, in the preparation of snow & ice control equipment, during snow & ice control operations or any time to meet operational requirements.

Must have a good working knowledge of Preventative Maintenance and how it pertains to a fleet operation.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Grade 12 or equivalent education and experience

Must possess a valid NS Driver's License, with a good driving record (a current driver's abstract will be required at time of interview)

Must possess a valid Red Seal Journeyperson Mechanic's License in the Truck & Transport Repair Trade, recognized in Nova Scotia.

Must have experience in heavy equipment, trucks and related equipment repair.  (Municipal Operations would be an asset)

Must possess a NS Motor Vehicle Inspector License for vehicle in this category, or be willing to attain in 6 months.Must supply their own hand tools and toolbox.

Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

Must have a reasonable knowledge of Fleet Equipment.

Must have full understanding of preventative maintenance, as it pertains to municipal equipment.

Familiarity with computers and a computerized work order system.

Must be able to work with minimum supervision, in a team environment.

Must have good attendance, as well as be reliable and punctual

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. WORK STATUS: Permanent, full-time

HOURS OF WORK:  Monday - Thursday, 4:00 pm to 2:00 am, 40 hours per week, with the exception of required overtime due to operational requirements (i.e. Snow & Ice Operation).

SALARY:  $36.04 per hour, as per the Collective Agreement between CUPE, Local 108 and Halifax Regional Municipality.

WORK LOCATION:  Position will be based at Thornhill Drive; however, during snow and ice control operations the incumbent may be assigned to other locations as needed.
