About the Position

Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for casual, seasonal positions of Summer Outdoor Inclusion Coordinator in the Recreation Programming division of Parks & Recreation and is committed to reflecting the community it serves and recognizing Diversity and Inclusion as one of the Municipality’s core values. The position is responsible for collaborating with the Community Recreation Coordinators and Inclusion and Accessible Specialist in the areas of training, developing and implementing in the delivery of inclusive recreation programs during the summer months. In collaboration with Summer Coordinator responsible for coaching and assisting summer staff in the areas of implementing behavior management strategies, providing personal care and the development of inclusive program modification to support inclusive programming. This position may work geographically and must be willing to travel between recreation centers throughout the summer.

Qualifications

Qualifications, Education and Experience:

  • Minimum enrolment in and undergraduate university degree or college diploma in a relevant field of study such as Therapeutic recreation, Child and Youth Studies, Psychology, Education Social Work, School of Communication. Disorders, Kinesiology- and/or equivalent level of training working with children and youth with a disability
  • Minimum 2-3 years related experience working with individuals of various ages and disabilities
  • Experience mentoring and/or coaching of staff and volunteer an asset
  • Previous training and/or experience in implementing behavioural management strategies
  • Previous Training and/or experience providing personal care
  • alid certification in CPR/First Aid and NVCI (can be provided by employer) 
  • Valid Driver's License and access to vehicle
  • Pervious experience with outdoor wilderness programs, overnight camps or nature-based programming an asset
  • Canoeing and Kayaking experience an asset  

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Must have demonstrated interest and knowledge of working with individuals with special needs who require support
  • Must be able to effectively provide support to those who have special needs and have good knowledge of inclusion strategies, adapting activities, behavior management and community resources
  • Must also have the ability to develop and access a variety of resources and a working knowledge of recreation program planning to meet the needs of all program participants

Job Status:  These are casual, seasonal positions and successful candidates must be willing to work a flexible schedule. There are opportunities available at various work locations throughout HRM, which are identified through separate postings on our Employer website (7195BR, 7196BR).  These are non-union positions with a wage of $19.30 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay).
