The successful candidates will work as part of a team to provide daily care to our 16- year-old son. Our son has complex special needs, including autism and a pain disorder. He is also non verbal. Because of his complex needs, our son requires 2:1 support at all times, and sometimes 3:1 support. Successful candidates will work as a team with at least one other caregiver (sometimes two) at all times. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training and experience with challenging, complex behaviours is an asset. Rate of pay is $20/hour. We can offer both full-time and part time work, weekdays and evenings.

• Providing personal care (assisting with showering, dressing, toileting)

• Assisting with eating meals and snacks

• Providing and participating in recreational activities within and outside the home

• Driving within HRM (family van provided)

• Providing communication opportunities and working on communication goals Our son requires a lot of help with his activities of daily living. He is very dependent on caregivers for quality of life. Health and safety are the top priority.

Beyond that, we feel the following things are of key importance:

• Presume competence. Always assume he understands. Talk to him, rather than about him. Treat him with respect and maintain dignity to every extent possible.

• Fun recreational and leisure activities are a critical aspect of his care. Please be proactive in finding ways to engage him in fun activities. He enjoys drives in the car(often accompanied by stops for fast food of his choice), walks outside in his stroller (He can walk, but not long distances), strolling through shopping malls on rainy days, swimming and beach visits in warm weather, hanging out in his hot tub, doing puzzles at the table, etc.

• Honour all communication requests from him. Always try to discover what he has to say about his wants and needs. Respect his communication attempts, even when they are unconventional.

Qualifications

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training and experience with challenging, complex behaviours is an asset, but not required. Experience in working with autistic people is helpful, but not required. Most importantly, candidate should be enthusiastic to learn and should also be a good team player. The successful candidate will be working alongside a team of at least one (sometimes two) other people, so they would always be well supported.
