About the Colchester Historeum:

The Colchester Historical Society continues to preserve and present Colchester County’s past by striving to offer an authentic and inclusive perspective of local history and culture through community and visitor engagement in its operation of the Colchester Historeum, a museum and archives located in Truro, Nova Scotia. Using contemporary methods of interpretation, collections management, and education, we encourage conversation, understanding, and meaningful connections between all individuals.

About the opportunity:

The Colchester Historeum is seeking applications for a qualified individual to work under the supervision of the Archivist. The successful candidate will work in the Archives to digitize collections of school records, both for preservation and access purposes. The employee will work with fragile and aging records, taking care to digitize and rehouse the documents according to archival standard practices. As well, the worker will help to implement new digitization procedures, create templates for data entry, design new record descriptions and finding aids, and work to improve digitization techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Arranging, describing, and rehousing school records
  • Scanning/Digitizing school records
  • Data entry of the school records on the Historeum’s database
  • Developing and implementing procedures for digitization.
  • Ensuring that record scans are high quality and that fragile records are handled carefully.
  • Creating record descriptions or finding aids when necessary.
  • Assisting with other tasks in the Archives as required.

About you:

All applicants must:

  • Have a degree or college certificate or diploma in History, Art History, Canadian Studies, Museum Studies, Collections Management or a related field.
  • Be a motivated individual who possesses excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Be someone who can concentrate on repetitive tasks and stay accurate and motivated
  • Be someone who takes pride in details and checks their work twice for possible corrections.
  • Have experience working in an archival setting
  • Have experience with conducting primary and secondary research.
  • Have experience handling archival records.
  • Have experience scanning / digitizing records.
  • Have strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail)
  • Have data entry experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Be fluent in English, have very legible handwriting and can read and transcribe cursive writing
  • Be eligible to work in Canada.

The following are considered assets to this position:

  • Knowledge of best practices in collections management.
  • Experience handling archival documents.
  • Knowledge of Nova Scotian history.

Pay rate: $17.50 / per hour, 47 weeks

Start date: Tuesday, September 6th 2022

End date: Wednesday, August 9th 2023
