Our Internship program offers paid 18-month internships for new grads interested in a career in municipal public service. The program provides training, development, and on-the-job experience for candidates that have graduated within the last 24 months.

We are inviting applications for the 18-month term position of Design Technologist Intern in Design & Construction with Public Works. This is a bargaining unit position. The Intern Program is designed to provide experiential learning and maximum professional exposure to interns in their chosen field of study while exploring the benefits of working for the municipality. Over the course of the internship, candidates will learn about government policy, operations, administration, services, and planning in a collaborative and supportive environment.  Interns make a difference in our community and organization!

The purpose of this position is to provide technical, administrative and project management support to the Design Engineer.  The intern will be responsible to apply municipal guidelines and policies to assist in the development and production of designs for Capital projects and must have knowledge and understanding of civil/municipal engineering practices and possess the ability to operate computer-aided design software. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the guidance of the Design Engineering Technologist Team Lead:

  • Completes plan and profile design drawings for capital projects modeled in AutoCAD Civil 3D software.
  • Applies municipal design guidelines and policies to develop and produce designs for capital projects.
  • Assists with determining project scope and design requirements.
  • Assesses survey information, conducts site investigations.
  • Assists with preparing quantities, cost estimates, and specifications for capital projects.
  • Assists with stakeholder design meetings, summarizing comments to incorporate in the final design.
  • Follows departmental project management and quality control processes including documentation and peer review

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  •  Graduate with a Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology; to be eligible for the internship, candidates must have graduated within the last 24 months or be confirmed to graduate in June 2022 from a recognized or legally authorized university or community college.
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada at time of application and maintain this status for the duration of 18-month term.
  • Working knowledge of MS OfficeKnowledge of the Specification for Municipal Services, NS Road Builders Standard Specifications for Municipal Services, HRM Municipal Service Systems Design Guidelines and general municipal engineering construction practices and procedures;
  • Knowledge in estimating, measuring and recording quantities of materials, unit costs and complete project costs.

  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated an interest in public policy or government administration
