This series of courses is fully funded by the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency to provide students with new skills for entry-level careers in construction.
Overview
This 8-week series of courses covers various climates, technologies, tools, costs, and building codes in the construction industry. In hands-on, practical courses, you learn to safely use a variety of tools and equipment with a strong focus on safety and understanding site operations.
You will gain an understanding of employer expectations and be ready to:
- Work safely on construction sites
- Work and communicate effectively as part of a construction team
- Use and care for basic hand and portable power tools safely
- Use ladders and scaffolding safely
- Measure accurately using metric and imperial systems
- Identify, handle and store construction materials
Successful participants will have the skills to pursue entry-level employment and may also opt to further their studies with one of NSCC’s building and manufacturing programs.

Courses
HCFS 1000: Introduction to the Construction Industry
This course introduces Nova Scotia’s construction industry and employer expectations.
CTLA 1003: Safety, Tools and Equipment
Safety is critical on any construction site. This course introduces the regulations and practices that keep workers safe and ensure the safety of others. You will learn about and use a basic selection of hand and power tools, after being instructed in safe use and care.
HCFS 1002: Construction Site Operations
You will learn about equipment, procedures, requirements and public safety on building sites.
CTLA 1008: Construction Site Operations II
This course will prepare you to participate in safe site set up and layout for construction sites.
