Program Overview

This advanced diploma program is designed to complement an existing university degree in the sciences, a geomatics diploma or previous geomatics-related experience. The program provides a strong foundation in the area of geomatics and the effective exploration, management and monitoring of marine and coastal environments.

In this field, you apply integrated geodetic skills in coastal mapping and nautical charting, offshore construction and resource exploration, coastal zone management, habitat mapping and environmental sciences.

You also acquire skills in GPS positioning and hydrographic surveying, geographic information systems (GIS), physical oceanography, remote sensing, cartography and applications required for analysis and presentation of geospatial data as they apply to marine and coastal activities.

As a Geomatics expert in Marine environments, you may help oil and gas companies determine where and how to safely establish drilling rigs, provide data to establish international maritime boundaries and map out the path for a submarine power or communications cable.

This program is located at NSCC's Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS). COGS is the Lawrencetown site of Annapolis Valley Campus.

Admission Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Science or Engineering or a two-year diploma in a related technology program.

Choose NSCC

  • NSCC's Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) provides a focused approach to geomatics training. COGS has earned a strong reputation among employers and geomatics professionals for the quality of the programs, hands-on training and practical learning provided to students.
  • You learn in an environment that is dedicated to geomatics training and work alongside other students studying related disciplines.
  • Small class sizes provide you with lots of opportunities for one-on-one interaction and support.
  • You use the most up-to-date equipment and software and get the hands-on training that makes grads the preferred choice of employers.
  • This is the only Marine Geomatics program in North America.
  • You participate in practical field exercises on a survey vessel in the Annapolis Basin.

Employment Opportunities

  • Hydrographic agencies, ocean and seabed research, offshore construction and engineering, seismic exploration, software development and other private and public sector organizations.

Our Grads

  • Graduates are involved with numerous activities related to coastal and offshore projects. They're performing bathymetric surveys and creating nautical charts. They're helping offshore construction companies determine the feasibility and routing of offshore cables and pipelines. Graduates are navigating vessels and providing positioning for the installation of offshore structures.
