Overview

If you're a practising musician or somebody who thrives behind the scenes, this program builds on your previous education to prepare you for a career in the music business. 

You develop a comprehensive understanding of the different revenue streams available to artists and professionals and learn the broad range of skills needed to develop your audience. These skills include:

  • Developing release strategies
  • Creating and implementing digital marketing, communications and social media plans 
  • Project and event management
  • Negotiating
  • Understanding copyright, rights collectives and contracts

You learn in the classroom and in the field with industry partners, giving you the networking skills necessary to build your own network. 

With a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation, you’ll leave with the competencies needed to adapt in a fast-paced and ever-changing music marketplace.

Work experience

  • Field experience (work placement) is a mandatory credit course completed at the end of your program. It provides you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills outside of the classroom.
    • Opportunities are typically unpaid and last approximately 5 weeks.
    • Transportation, accommodations and other costs related to work placements are your responsibility.

Choose NSCC

  • Throughout the program, industry experts and guest speakers are brought into the classroom to deliver specialized training.
  • The industry connections you make in this program create post-graduation opportunities.
  • This is the only program of its kind in Nova Scotia. You collaborate with peers and professionals in related programs, which could include Music Arts, Music Production and Engineering, and Professional Photography.

Other info

  • Many of the volunteer and work experience opportunities occur in environments that require you to be 19 or older. Students who are under the age of 19 may not be able to fully participate in these activities.

Admission requirements

  • Two-year college diploma, undergraduate degree or equivalent.
    • High School Graduation Diploma plus minimum 5-years industry experience may be considered for admission to this program under NSCC’s PLAR policy.
    • International students – Submit your official post-secondary documents for assessment. View English language requirements by country

Program requirements

  • Portfolio development – As part of your studies at NSCC, you develop a portfolio of your work; the portfolio captures your achievements and profiles your skills to employers.

Tuition

2022-23 tuition will be announced in the late Spring once approved by the government of Nova Scotia. Program costs and fees (textbooks, supplies, etc.) are additional. Amounts below were for the 2021-22 academic year.
