Overview

The Accounting concentration builds on the accounting skills and business knowledge developed in your first year. Whether your goal is to work within an existing organization or start your own company, this concentration gives you the confidence to start your career.

In this concentration, you:

  • Learn computerized accounting
  • Analyze numbers in a way that will enable you to make strategic business recommendations
  • Expand your knowledge around corporate accounting, manufacturing accounting, partnership accounting and the tax implications for different types of businesses
  • Develop your foundational learning around business processes through the Capstone Project

Work experience

  • Field experience (work placement) is a mandatory credit course, providing you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills outside of the classroom.
    • Opportunities are typically unpaid and last approximately 5 weeks.
    • Transportation, accommodations and other costs related to work experience are the responsibility of the student.

If you're interested in furthering your studies in accounting after graduation, you may be eligible to receive advanced standing in programs offered by other post-secondary institutions and professional associations.

Admission requirements

  • Successful completion of Business Administration – Year 1 (including ACTG2000 Financial Accounting II elective) or advanced standing.
  • Advanced standing – To be considered, you must apply to and meet the Admission Requirements for the Business Administration program. Advanced standing is based on academic credits (certificate/diploma/degree) completed from a recognized public institution within the past ten years that meet the academic requirements of the full first year of the program. Advanced Standing is subject to seat availability.

Program requirements

  • Portfolio development – As part of your studies at NSCC, you develop a portfolio of your work; the portfolio captures your achievements and profiles your skills to employers.

Career options

  • Graduates are qualified to accept entry-level positions in many accounting fields, including financial accounting, managerial accounting and taxation accounting. These opportunities exist in every sector.

Future study options
