Program Overview

This program prepares you for a career as a ship's Engineering Officer in the commercial marine industry. You build on your broad-based knowledge of the engineering systems used on a modern ship, with a focus on four functions at the management level: marine engineering; electrical, electronic and control engineering; maintenance and repair; and leadership/managerial skills.

You learn the theoretical and applied principles for each function – managing the operation of propulsion plant machinery, electrical and electronic control equipment; establishing safe and effective maintenance and repair procedures; and developing effective leadership and control that ensure safe operations and care for persons on board your ship.

Admission Requirements

Program Requirements

  • A valid Marine Medical Certificate (to meet Transport Canada's requirements for approved marine/cadet training programs), is required for the program. Details are provided with your acceptance notification.

Choose NSCC

  • You complete senior officer training in a state-of-the-art nautical training facility.

Employment Opportunities

  • Students can begin the Marine Engineering Technology – Diploma program and after 2.5 years may graduate and start work in the industry or continue their training by enrolling in the Marine Engineering Technology – Advanced Diploma program.
  • Upon your completion of the program and required sea service, you achieve course credits towards the Transport Canada 2nd Class Marine Engineer/Chief Certificate.
  • Graduates may find employment with a number of shipping companies. A fleet of cargo, tanker, passenger ferry, research and offshore supply vessels operate in the inland, lake and coastal waters of Canada and international waters. Engineering Officers are in demand on a worldwide basis and the officer certification achieved upon program and sea service completion is recognized by the International Maritime Organization through Transport Canada.

  • This program has Transport Canada approval.
  • Successful program completion requires that students maintain an attendance standard of 90% overall and a pass mark of 60% in all subjects.
  • International students – you must find a work placement on board a foreign vessel as a Canadian Passport/Permanent Resident Card is required to sail on Canadian vessels. Once you secure your work placement, we'll coordinate details with your employer.
  • Important Abilities & Skills – Seafarers are required to be able to lift a minimum of 22 kilograms and have the physical capability to wear and negotiate both breathing apparatus and lifesaving equipment.
  • Safety Training – This program places a high importance on providing you with the skills and knowledge to work safely in industry. You participate in a number of introductory safety awareness courses to prepare for employment.
  • Many employers in this industry require a current, official Criminal Record check as part of the hiring process. A conviction on your criminal record may impact your ability to secure employment.
