Building your Small Business

NSCC and Acadia Entrepreneurship Centre and the Tri County Sandbox are collaborating to offer a new and innovative program for entrepreneurs in the Annapolis Valley, Southwest Nova and South Shore regions of Nova Scotia. As the only offering of its kind in the province, the Building Your Small Business Program is designed to cultivate a culture of entrepreneurship and increase support systems for entrepreneurs in our communities.

This collaboration between NSCC, Acadia University and the Tri County Sandbox provides new, active and aspiring entrepreneurs with the opportunity to explore the entrepreneurial world in a part-time or small-scale capacity. The outcome will be to produce confident educated and empowered new entrepreneurs that will bring new business and economic development to rural Nova Scotia.

This eight month program will begin on Friday, May 3, 2019. The Building Your Small Business program is delivered in a flexible format using a tailored approach to support the individual goals of entrepreneurs. The program is delivered through a combination of in-person meetings and online interactions including:

  • Compulsory and elective online courses
  • Workshops
  • Community events
  • Mentorship creation
  • One-on-one consulting
  • An individual development plan
  • Community outreach and networking

Program Highlights

Advisory Process – Work with an assigned advisor who will assist in identifying a solutions based learning plan that will strengthen your business or support your business start-up planning process. This will include:

  • Community partner supports and resources
  • Course and workshop programming at NSCC, Acadia and the Tri County Sandbox
  • Industry connections and opportunities, network connection and collaboration.

The learning program will have regular check-ins, adjustments and milestones built in along the way to support you throughout this process.

Foundations of Entrepreneurship Course – This course will introduce you to the foundational principles of entrepreneurship and the different context in which these principles can be applied. Topics include self- employment, recognizing different types of business structures, and identifying legal and financial considerations affecting small businesses. 

Applied Entrepreneurship – This course will focus on the entrepreneurial skills required and the resources available to run and grow a company. Emphasis is on planning and future management of the small business, including topics such as purchasing existing firms, franchising, entrepreneurship, personnel, and marketing. You will explore and develop the components of a business plan in relationship to your business idea with the overall intent to launch your business.

Community of Practice – Develop of a cohort community to work and share ideas with. This community will help you identify collaborative opportunities that include business ideas, solutions and partnerships.

Community of Resources – Connect to your local community and the entrepreneurial supports that exist within. These networks will help you tap into solutions to fit your resource needs and potentially expand your client base.

NSCC Entrepreneurship is part of the Office of Applied Research & Innovation as a dedicated program that provides resources, touch points and experiences to staff and students to expose them to and further develop an entrepreneurial skill set.

Acadia Entrepreneurship Centre

The Acadian Entrepreneurship Center strives to cultivate an entrepreneurial ecosystem for our communities through collaboration, supportive partnerships and resource sharing with institutions and community service providers.

AEC has been supporting entrepreneurs and businesses in the Annapolis Valley and on the South Shore for almost 30 years, providing business counselling, consulting and facilitation services for students, small and medium size businesses, social enterprises and non-profit organizations.
