Student awards helping to make creative dreams a reality
Changing directions
When Amber H. finished university, she was searching for something that would help her explore her creative side. With her DSLR camera in hand, she enrolled in the Professional Photography program at NSCC’s Ivany Campus with dreams of making her mark on the creative sector.
Life-changing financial aid
Like many students, Amber was trying to balance studying, making industry connections and life while figuring out how to pay for tuition and program costs. It was during a particularly challenging time that she connected with Student Services and learned about Urgent Aid, a program designed to help students experiencing financial strain due to unforeseen expenses.
“As an international student on a limited budget, I was struggling to pay my tuition. That’s when I got help from Mike Duggan in Student Services, who helped me apply for Urgent Aid and other awards,” says Amber about receiving financial support. “Receiving this support is life-changing.”
What’s next?
Amber has been busy during her program attending networking events, taking photos and headshots and even getting hired as a part-time videographer, giving her invaluable work experience as she completes the final year of her program.
“After finishing my program, I’ll focus on working full-time and getting my permanent residency. I’d love to keep working in the creative industry,” says Amber.
How to support Creative Industries students at NSCC
NSCC’s School of Business and Creative Industries, in partnership with the NSCC Foundation, has established the Spark Creativity Student Bursary Fund to create bursaries for students from communities under-represented in Nova Scotia’s creative sector. “This fund will create more awareness for students in creative industries, giving them more chances to get involved in the community in meaningful ways,” says Amber.
Together, with your support, we can work toward a more diverse representation within Nova Scotia’s creative economy through access to education.
