Fisherman inspired to become accountant

Burridge campus grad credits NSCC with career success

Donovan Bain

Imagine cruising the Atlantic Ocean, hauling lobster traps alongside your father when, one day, you make a decision that puts you on route to becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and a manager at one of only five accounting firms in your home town.

Donovan Bain says this dramatic career shift was partly inspired by a story of a local woman who attended NSCC's Burridge Campus and also went on to study to become a CPA.

The subject of the story, Darcy Comeau, says she never thought her actions would affect another student.  "I'm very proud someone would use my story to inspire them, their future and their life."

At 25, Donovan admits returning to school was always in the back of his mind, but Darcy's story was the push he needed to consider accounting. "I wasn’t 100 per cent sure what I wanted to do when I started, but NSCC gave me time to ease into my studies and find my own path," says Donovan.

"An NSCC diploma is a very valuable thing on its own; but, you can also use it, as I did, as a foundation to take your education and life to the next level and beyond."

"It takes a lot of courage to take that initial leap without knowing how things will work out on the other end." With the support of his girlfriend (now wife) Carmen and his parents, Donovan took that leap.

Success at NSCC

Not one to shy away from hard work, in addition to his studies, Donovan worked as the Director of Finance for the Burridge Campus Student Association. He won multiple academic awards, including the Governor General's Academic Medal and graduated with Honours.

Making the transition to Mount Saint Vincent University through NSCC's two-plus-two program, Donovan continued this momentum when he graduated with distinction from the Bachelor of Business Administration program. He then went on to complete the Certified General Accountant Program (CGA).

Donovan admits the path was not without its challenges. "I got married while attending NSCC and my wife and I had two children when I was in the CGA program."

With two young kids at home and his wife working a busy job as a Registered Nurse, finding time to devote to his studies was difficult. Donovan says, "Sometimes it meant I had to wake up earlier in the morning than everyone else or go to bed later at night, but I always got the work done."

After transitioning his NSCC work term into a career at Conrad Hurlbert LeBlanc Inc., Donovan now looks back on his NSCC education as a tipping point. "An NSCC diploma is a very valuable thing on its own; but, you can also use it, as I did, as a foundation to take your education and life to the next level and beyond."
