Making a career change

NSCC alumni Karina Matthews-Denny

Karina Matthews-Denny is a two-time NSCC graduate.

After completing NSCC’s Carpentry program in 2001, she worked on many of the new buildings that now welcome residents and visitors to her community of Membertou First nation.

Karina, a single mother of six, worked for years as a carpenter before deciding it was time for a career change. She enrolled in NSCC’s Office Administration program at Marconi Campus. After graduating, she found a job that would keep her in Membertou and fulfill her passion for her community.

Karina is the administrative support assistant for Senator Dan Christmas. Outside of work, she volunteers with several organizations and serves as president of the Membertou Native Women’s Group.

“Thanks to my NSCC education, I have a career that helps me to get more involved,” says Karina. “I want to continue my growth as an advocate for Indigenous and underrepresented groups just as he [Senator Dan Christmas] has done.”
