Inspiring youth through creative expression

Andre Fenton is a two-time NSCC graduate.

Andre Fenton is harnessing his passion for writing and the arts to inspire youth in his community.

A two-time graduate of NSCC, Andre Fenton is combining his expertise from his Screen Arts diploma in 2015, his Social Services diploma in 2018 and various writing courses through Continuing Education in 2016 to make a difference in the lives of young people in his community and beyond.

“NSCC definitely gave me a unique set of skills, like having the work ethic of a filmmaker, and the knowledge and professionalism of a social services worker. I feel comfortable, confident and adaptable in most areas post-graduation,” says Andre.

Andre’s most recent endeavor was the successful publication of his first book titled, Worthy of Love. The story follows a young, mixed-race man struggling with poor self-image and identity.

“My inspiration for writing Worthy of Love was to explore the idea surrounding lack of confidence in body image within young black men, and to show a side of vulnerability within masculinity, while using themes of accountability and self-love as a catalyst to create a better future,” says Andre.

Since the publication of his book, Andre’s been doing signings and school visits to talk about it and to connect with youth. He has begun running workshops for kids in junior high and high school to help them develop a way of expressing themselves through written or spoken word.

“My hope for the young people I work with is to remind them how brilliant and resilient they are even when life doesn’t always tell them that. I want to help them tap into and explore their creative side.”

Andre hopes to continue and even expand the creative workshops he offers so that he can keep mentoring and working with youth. He is also working on his own creative projects and is focused on writing his second novel.
