NSCC's response to COVID-19: view updates

Academic Update

January 27, 2022 – Jill Provoe

ASL Version

Good afternoon,

I wanted to take a moment to share several important academic updates and reminders with you. But first, I want to share my gratitude to all who have been on campus this week while following our COVID-19 safety protocols and the advice of Public Health. On campus learning has been going well because of your commitment to safety and your efforts to follow and steward our safety practices in our shops, studios, and labs.

Program Delivery

The College has determined that we can proceed with our plan to return to on campus learning by Monday, February 7. This decision is in line with the recent recommendation from Public Health that post-secondary institutions resume in-person classes in support of student wellness.

Programs delivered in-person may include some elements of online learning. Academic Chairs will communicate any delivery changes to you no later than Wednesday, February 2. The College will continue to monitor the COVID-19 environment and Public Health guidance. If you have any questions or concerns, please check in with your Faculty or Academic Chair.

Please note: The deadline for the last day to withdraw from winter term classes and receive a 95% fee refund (exclusive of non-refundable tuition deposit) has been extended to Thursday, February 3, 2022.

Portfolio as a Milestone Requirement for Graduation 2021-22

As a COVID-19 curriculum change measure, the portfolio milestone requirement has been removed as a graduation requirement for 2021-22 graduates only. This milestone refers to a portfolio artifact and is stated as: A portfolio appropriate to the learner's career goals and program of study. Students who would still like to complete their portfolio will have their work assessed accordingly and the credit will be granted and show on their academic transcript.

The program-level portfolio outcome remains across all programs. The program-level outcome refers to a portfolio approach to learning and is stated as: Apply a Portfolio approach to the personal management of learning and career planning relating to the learner’s occupational readiness.

Some courses also have portfolio-related course learning outcomes – the expectation is that these course level learning outcomes must still be met.

Convocation – Class of 2022

I know many of our future Class of 2022 graduates are already thinking about Convocation and what it might look like this year. Please know we will continue to consider our options as they align with evolving Public Health guidance and restrictions for gathering limits. We’ll keep you updated on our 2022 celebration as we know more.

Student Wellness and Supports

We continue to adapt to various changes and challenges with the pandemic. We are committed to doing everything we can to support you and your continued learning. Always know we care about your well-being and have support and services available for students (login required) and employees (login required). Please stay connected with your Faculty and your Student Services Advisor (login required).

I want to thank you all for your continued commitment to your studies and for the care and kindness you show towards yourselves and one another as we carry on through a pandemic.

Sincerely,

Jill Provoe
Acting Vice President, Academic
