NSCC students to tackle Premier's challenge during virtual innovation event

November 15, 2021 – Media Release

Halifax, N.S. -- This Friday, more than 200 Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) students will participate in the 2021 Challenge Nova Scotia Competition – a pan-provincial event that calls on NSCC students to develop innovative solutions to a social challenge issued to them by the Premier.

“This event offers a perfect opportunity for our future leaders to learn about decision-making and hone the important skill of collaboration in helping solve issues facing their communities,” says Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston. “As a solutionist myself, I’m eager to see the solutions the students develop and present.”

At the beginning of the fully-online event, Premier Houston and NSCC President Don Bureaux will address participants via pre-recorded video and reveal this year’s secret challenge question. Teams of three to five students will then develop their solutions and create 90-second explainer videos using online collaboration tools.

“Since the spring of 2020, our province has faced many unique challenges that continue to impact families, the economy and people’s livelihoods,” says Don Bureaux. “This has helped shape the question we’re posing to our students and offers a chance to consider how we might use this challenge as an opportunity to develop solutions.”

In the days following the event, the student team’s explainer videos will be reviewed by a panel of judges – representing the College's industry and community partners. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, and their video solutions will be presented to the Premier for consideration.
