No place like home
Katie Conklin has no plan to leave Halifax anytime soon. As the online communications coordinator for Destination Halifax - a tourism and marketing organization for the Halifax region - the Fall River native spends her days promoting everything the city has to offer.
"There are so many beautiful places, but I cannot imagine living anywhere but Nova Scotia," Conklin says. "There's no place like home."
A Bachelor of Arts graduate from St. Francis Xavier University, Conklin studied Public Relations at Nova Scotia Community College and worked at Molson Coors before settling into her current position.
Always loved writing
As a child, Conklin didn't have a dream job like other kids, but she always loved writing. When she was in university, Conklin met a woman who did public relations for a tourism organization out west and remembers thinking how fun the job looked.
"And now I'm doing this," she says.
In her position with Destination Halifax, Conklin spends much of her time finding out why people travel to Halifax. Through online polls and word of mouth, she has found most people are drawn to Halifax because of the city's history but they stay because of the friendliness of the people.
"It's a welcoming city," she says, noting while Halifax has a rich history, Destination Halifax wants people to know the city is continuing to move forward with new development and big events.
"We do have that historic connection but we're also not stuck in the past," she says. "I love Halifax. I’m so happy I get to promote it every day."
